THE BENT GUIDE DOG

I have a message for all those guide dogs that care to listen. The blind and visually impaired have but two choices to travel independently, safely and with confidence. The white traveling cane or guide dog.

The white traveling cane is made of cold metal and wood. It is an impersonal tool that has no name, needs little care and shows no affection. To use the cane correctly will require training. Yet it suits some people’s needs and life style.

The blind or visually impaired person that uses a guide dog makes a commitment to another being. A guide dog requires care, affection, daily training, discipline and respect.

There is no correct choice for it is a matter of personal preference.

My partner did not master the skills needed to become a good white cane traveler. He became impatient and careless. Hiding in our home is a bent white traveling cane with tire marks. It’s a reminder of those careless days.

Please be alert. Nobody wants a bent guide dog.
