THE GUIDE DOG IMAGE
There are many different breeds of dogs that have been carefully
bred, raised and trained to become guide dogs. Labrador
Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Doberman Pinchers and German
Shepherds, to name a few.
German Shepherds, Doberman Pinchers and the like have a
presence that demands respect. Their image is one of business…all
business. Dark gray suit, matching tie and cocktails at
the club.
They have that don’t bother me look and are serious
looking dogs indeed. However stern they may appear to those
that don’t know them, they would not be at their partner’s
side if they were anything less than what they were trained
to be.
I am a Labrador Retriever. Some of my colleagues may disagree,
but it is my opinion that Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers
and the like have an image problem. They have that cute,
adorable, casual look. Shorts, Hawaiian shirt, and a six
pack within reach.
Although we are serious about our jobs it appears to the
public that we are having too much fun at it. To be taken
seriously we must change our image.
Labrador Retrievers in particular and all others that care
to listen, I have some advice. Throw away the shorts and
the Hawaiian shirts.
Buy a suit, a tie, and watch your language. Join a country
club or a yacht club not a topless club. Please remember
to wear the tie.
