MELVIN AND THE CAT
Yesterday I met a former guide dog classmate of mine. His
name is Melvin. When accepted for formal guide dog training
he had bragged of his talents and vowed that he would graduate
at the top of his class.
During a training session a cat was placed in front of
him. His legs trembled and his eyes widened. Frightened
he ran from the cat leaving his trainer behind.
Melvin had developed cat phobia and was not to be one of
us. Turning in his harness, he left school in disgrace.
Melvin was eventually retrained and became a Search and
Rescue dog. He works in the forests and mountains. A great
job they say.
I graduated at the top of my class and Melvin flunked out
of school. I now work in a sea of concrete, dodge traffic
all-day and live with a cat.
Surely there must be some rules to this game of life. I
say to all that care to listen, “Melvin couldn’t
find his own tail if he sat on it.”
