TIMING
When you are at your partner’s side never forget
that your life is about timing. There is guide work time,
training time, chow time, playtime and bedtime. There is
a time and a place for everything. This rule is not to be
broken, for one cannot do two things at once. For those
who cannot obey the rules there is retirement time.
When working as a guide it is written that food is to be
ignored whether it is on the ground or offered to you by
a friend or stranger. Although some sniffing is to be expected
it is best not to. Sniffing is the path that leads to temptation
and sinful ways.
There are those guide dogs that have succumbed to the pleasures
of food while working as a guide. This is surely a case
of bad timing and a clear violation of the principals of
guide work.
When working as a guide remember your training and just
say “No” to those hot dogs and hamburgers. Never
again should we hear the words, “please pass the mustard.”
